Pembroke College Cambridge: A Short History.S. C. Roberts (ed.) - 2010 - Cambridge University Press.
This short history of Pembroke College, Cambridge appeared in 1936, during a particularly successful period for the college in terms of both academic and sporting achievements. Pembroke was founded in 1347, when Edward III granted Marie de St Pol, widow of the Earl of Pembroke, a licence for the foundation of a new educational establishment in the young University of Cambridge. The college flourished, and from the mid-nineteenth century expanded greatly. The author of this book, which is still (...)

Ignorant armies: The state, the public, and the making of foreign policy.Earl C. Ravenal - 2000 - Critical Review: A Journal of Politics and Society 14 (2-3):327-374.
A state's foreign policy is constrained by parameters that inhere in the structure of the international system and in the nation's own political‐constitutional, social, and economic systems. The latter, domestic parameters, include “public opinion.” Because the public is largely ignorant of foreign affairs, policy‐making elites have wide scope for acting more rationally than would otherwise be possible, although public opinion operates on the second‐order effects of foreign policy (e.g., taxes, casualties)—inviting mismatches of objectives and means. The prevalent nonrational theories of (...)

What’s Empire Got to Do with It? The Derivation of America’s Foreign Policy.Earl C. Ravenal - 2009 - Critical Review: A Journal of Politics and Society 21 (1):21-75.
ABSTRACT The common claim that American foreign policy is “imperial” is contradicted by the fact that the actual, definable historical empires have characteristically exercised formal, as well as decisive, control over their peripheral dependencies—properties that the keenest analysts do not ascribe to the geopolitical system that has been constructed by the United States. Why, then, the ascription of “empire” to the United States? One reason is to condemn American foreign policy by linking it to the unjust, destructive, and self‐destructive tendencies (...)

The Connection Between Spatial and Mathematical Ability Across Development.Christopher J. Young, Susan C. Levine & Kelly S. Mix - 2018 - Frontiers in Psychology 9:358219.
In this article, we review approaches to modeling a connection between spatial and mathematical thinking across development. We critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of factor analyses, meta-analyses, and experimental literatures. We examine those studies that set out to describe the nature and number of spatial and mathematical skills and specific connections between these abilities, especially those that included children as participants. We also find evidence of strong spatial-mathematical connections and transfer from spatial interventions to mathematical understanding. Finally, we map (...)

On the roles of consciousness and representations in visual science.David C. Earle - 1998 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 21 (6):757-758.
It is argued that there is a role for the representational conception of vision, and that this is compatible with the task-level account advocated by Pessoa et al. However, the role of representations must be understood independently of our conscious experience of vision.

Toward a Just Work Law: Exit Options, Relationships, and Regulation.Stephen C. Nayak-Young - 2014 - Dissertation, University of Michigan
My dissertation comprises three inter-related chapters, all of which explore the nature of work law and critically analyze the prevailing emphasis on matters of contract. The Escape Plans of Mill and Jefferson: I discuss these thinkers’ unsuccessful “escape plans” to minimize wage work. Mill advocated cooperative, worker-owned firms, while Jefferson favored farming the vast American frontier. I explore whether, if realized, either proposal would have satisfied the demands of justice. I argue that such proposals are normatively deficient because they lead (...)

Does Depression Invalidate Competence? Consultants' Ethical, Psychiatric, and Legal Considerations.Ernlè W. D. Young, James C. Corby & Rodney Johnson - 1993 - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 2 (4):505.
The ethical principle of respect for autonomy has come into its own In American medicine since World War II as equal in importance to the traditional medicomoral principles of nonmaleficence and beneficence. Respect for autonomy provides the ethical underpinning for the patient's right to exercise an informed choice – whether to consent to or to refuse recommended medical treatment. However, an informed choice demands a certain level of competence. Typical criteria for patient competence to accept or to refuse medical treatments (...)
